The Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry provides state-of-the-art, evidence-based, family-centered clinical services; is a national leader in the education of pediatric mental health care professionals; advances knowledge through research; and advocates for the mental health of youth and families.

Research in the department focuses on developmental psychopathology and mental health problems seen by primary care pediatricians and by subspecialists in the tertiary care pediatric setting.

Research includes:

  •  Mental health services in primary care. John Lavigne, Mina Dulcan and colleagues have completed a study that investigates improving medication management of children with ADHD. Software that is now available for dissemination was developed to assist pediatricians in determining dosing levels for maximal therapeutic effect.

  • Developmental psychopathology. Rebecca Ford-Paz is developing community-based participatory research to understand and reduce disparities in prevalence and treatment of depression in Latino youth and families. A multi-pronged, culturally-tailored universal depression prevention intervention for Latino adolescents is being tested.

  • Pediatric psychology and neuropsychology. Jill Weissberg-Benchell is conducting a randomized controlled trial to prevent depression in teenagers with type 1 diabetes.

  • Parenting and obesity. Kelly Lowry studies the role of parenting in the development of obesity in young children with the Consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago Children.

  • Neurocognitive outcomes in pediatric acute liver failure. Lisa Sorensen is the coordinating psychologist for two multi-center studies.

  • Dataset for childhood epilepsy functioning. The Children’s Memorial Epilepsy Center works with the department to use a retrospective clinical dataset on information processing efficiency and executive skills in childhood epilepsy.

  • Psychopathology in children with epilepsy and nonepileptic seizures. Sigita Plioplys, working with the Epilepsy Center, seeks to understand risk factors for psychological conditions related to epilepsy.

  • Externally funded advocacy work. Colleen Cicchetti and Tali Raviv lead several projects relate to reducing the incidence and sequelae of violence in the Chicago Public Schools.
